It’s the kind of hat you can put a baby in because, well you can. We liked it so much we decided that when he came home from the hospital he would wear it. Somehow I never made a picture of him in it. So in mid June I assembled Tony and “the hat” and made these photos.

As he gets older we are finding he can take more and more social interaction, to a point. The balance between much social interaction and too much stimulation is a very fine line.

At the time I took these photos I knew that without a flash to fill in the shadows, I’d blow out the highlights and leave deep shadows by metering on the mid-tones (Zone V). In other words, I shot a normal exposure. Usually when presented a lighting problem like this you will want to fill in the shadows, but given the right subject matter you can create an interesting, if not moody, photograph. I used Ilford’s XP2, which I’ve found to have good exposure latitude along with the advantage of being C-41 processed.

She keeps Tony and I fed and clothed so it’s not too big of an imposition to let her sleep in late one day a year ;)

But all work and no play makes for work. And the weekends need to be about more than work. So to balance things out we took advantage of a beautiful day on Sunday to get out together as a family and go to the park.

We packed up Tony and went for a stroll around Centennial Park in Howard County. Tony got to watch the birds, geese, ducks, and dogs. As well as the people walking, biking, jogging, roller skating, and playing basketball. These are the photos from our first family walk in the park.

His babbles are getting louder while remaining unintelligible, kind of like Bob Dylan. In a baby’s vocabulary the word “goo” is very important. “Goo” is used to express whatever emotion or sentiment the baby is feeling at the time; I’m hot, I’m cold, I’m happy, I’m sad, I have something very important I want to say, and on and on. We the parents find all this way too cute and relish every “goo” this wonderful little boy utters.

He slept most of the morning and after the initial novelty of being at his Grandparents house wore off, Tony got a little cranky. My Dad solved the problem by walking around with Tony on his shoulder till he fell asleep. Dad sat down in the chair with Tony for about two hours letting him get his rest, before handing him off to my Mom for another hour of sleep. Tony got what he wanted: attention and a warm shoulder to sleep on.

I took a couple of photos with my Dad’s point-n-shoot Sony digital camera.
